Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are only daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of what he left. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for the parents, to each one of them a sixth of what he left, if he had a child. But if he had no child and the parents inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers or sisters, for his mother is a sixth — after any bequest he may have made or debt. When a surplus remains after the fixed shares and there is no residuary, it is returned to the sharers in proportion to their shares — except the husband and wife.

Held by 'Umar, 'Ali, Ibn Mas'ud and the Hanafi and Hanbali schools. Zayd ibn Thabit and the classical Maliki and Shafi'i position sends the surplus to the treasury instead.

A husband, a mother, a full sister and a grandfather: Zayd's ruling is that the sister is first assigned her half, then her portion and the grandfather's are pooled and divided between them, the male receiving the share of two females.
