Enter what was left and who survives. Every share comes back with the verse it rests on, the rule that produced it, and arithmetic you can check by hand.

Why this is not a spreadsheet

Three things separate a correct division from a plausible one.

Exact arithmetic, never rounded

Shares are held as exact fractions throughout. A third is a third — not 0.3333 — because ‘awl and radd re-base denominators repeatedly, and one rounding error corrupts the whole division.

Every share carries its evidence

No number appears without the verse or narration behind it. If a heir is excluded, the report names who excluded them and on what basis.

Disagreement is shown, not hidden

Where the recognised schools genuinely differ — the grandfather with brothers, the Mushtarakah, the surplus — the app tells you, names the holders of each position, and lets you choose.

How an estate is divided

Four claims, in a fixed order agreed by all four schools.

  1. 1

    Burial

The cost of washing, shrouding and burial is met first, before anything else.

  2. 2

    Debts

Every debt is settled — owed to people and owed to Allah. The Qur’an names the bequest first, and the Prophet ﷺ ruled that the debt is paid first.

  3. 3

    The bequest

Up to one third may be given away, and no more. Nothing may be left to an heir unless the others consent.

  4. 4

    The heirs

The fixed shares are paid, and whatever remains goes to the nearest male relative. Nothing here is discretionary.

The verses this rests on

Inheritance is one of the few areas of law the Qur’an sets out in numbers.

Surah An-Nisa' 4:11

Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are only daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of what he left. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for the parents, to each one of them a sixth of what he left, if he had a child. But if he had no child and the parents inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers or sisters, for his mother is a sixth — after any bequest he may have made or debt. Your parents and your children — you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. An obligation from Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is a fourth of what they leave — after any bequest they may have made or debt. And for the wives is one fourth of what you leave if you have no child. But if you have a child, for them is an eighth of what you leave — after any bequest you may have made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third — after any bequest that may have been made or debt, without harm. An instruction from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

Surah An-Nisa' 4:176

They request from you a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning one who leaves neither ascendants nor descendants. If a man dies leaving no child but he has a sister, she gets half of what he left. And he inherits from her if she has no child. But if there are two sisters, they get two thirds of what he left. And if there are brothers and sisters, the male gets the share of two females. Allah makes clear to you lest you go astray. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

The son takes what remains as the nearest male heir.

    Each of 2: $108,333.33

  • Father$83,333.33

The father takes one sixth only, because a son or grandson through a son takes the remainder as the nearest male heir.

  • Mother$83,333.33

The mother takes one sixth, because the deceased left a child or a grandchild through a son.

  • Wife$62,500.00

The wife takes one eighth, because the deceased left a child or a grandchild through a son.

  • Daughter$54,166.67

The daughter becomes a residuary through her brother, taking one share to his two.

Questions people ask

Why can’t the family simply agree on a different division?

The shares are an obligation from Allah, not a default that applies until the family prefers something else. The verse that closes the inheritance passage calls them limits and warns against transgressing them. What adult heirs may do — after they have received their shares and know what they are worth — is give away their own portion voluntarily. That is a gift from an owner, not a re-drawing of the division.

  • Surah An-Nisa' 4:13-14
    Surah An-Nisa' 4:13-14

These are the limits set by Allah. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits, He will put him into the Fire, abiding eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment.

Placed immediately after the inheritance verses: the shares are limits (hudud), and altering them is transgression.

  • Surah An-Nisa' 4:7
    Surah An-Nisa' 4:7

For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much — an obligatory share.

Establishes that inheritance is an obligation (farida), not a discretionary gift, and that women inherit by right.

Why does a son receive twice a daughter’s share?

Where a brother and sister inherit together as residuaries, he takes two shares to her one — and with that comes an obligation she does not carry: maintaining his wife, his children and, where needed, his female relatives. Her share is hers alone, and nothing may be claimed from it. The ratio is also not universal: maternal half-siblings share their third equally, and in many configurations a woman inherits the same as or more than a man in the same case.

The primary text for the husband, the wives, and the uterine (maternal) siblings. The word "brother or sister" here is read by consensus as the maternal siblings — Ibn Mas'ud and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas recited it explicitly as "a brother or sister from the mother".

How much may be left by will?

One third of what remains after the debts, and no more. Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas ؓ asked to give away two thirds and then a half; the Prophet ﷺ refused both and said "one third — and one third is a lot", adding that leaving heirs wealthy is better than leaving them begging.

One third — and one third is a lot. It is better to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging from people.

Said to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. This is the source of the one-third ceiling on bequests.

The Qur’an mentions the bequest before the debt. Which is paid first?

The debt. ‘Ali ؓ said that the Prophet ﷺ ruled the debt to be settled before the bequest, even though the verse mentions the bequest first — and the scholars are agreed on it. The order is: burial expenses, then all debts, then the bequest up to a third, then the heirs.

The soul of the believer remains suspended by his debt until it is settled on his behalf.

One begins with the deceased's funeral preparation, then the settlement of debts, then the execution of the bequest from one third of what remains, and only then is the residue divided among the heirs.

My son died before me. Do his children inherit from me?

They inherit only if no living son survives — a nearer descendant excludes a more remote one. If another son is alive, the grandchildren are excluded. This is one of the most common causes of hardship, and the remedy the jurists point to is a bequest: up to a third may be left to them, and they are not heirs, so no consent is needed.

The people of knowledge have agreed that among residuaries the nearer excludes the more remote, that the son excludes the son’s son, and that the father excludes the siblings.
